How VoIP Works
By Joe Robertson

Long distance calling is never going to be the same again with VOIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol. It basically converts the audio signals into digital data and then transmits it to the receiver at the other end. With the help of VOIP you can make unlimited phone calls to various parts of the world for the same charge. In a way you are almost a few steps ahead of the telephone company in your neighborhood because of it.

The technology behind VOIP is absolutely revolutionary. It has the capability to completely change the phone systems of the world.

There is not just a particular way to make a call using VOIP there are various methods of communicating almost like "flavors".

The most popular one among these is through the use of ATA or Analog Telephone Adaptor. You can connect a normal phone to the computer or the Internet connection to exploit the facilities of VOIP. The ATA converts analog signals to digital ones. It converts the analog signals from the phone and converts it into digital data to send it via the Internet. As soon as the connections have been set up, you are almost ready to start making calls.

Another way to communicate through the VOIP is through the IP Phones. These are highly specialized phones that look like normal handsets with a cradle and buttons but it has an RJ-45 Ethernet connector instead of a RJ-11. These can be directly connected to the router.

You may also communicate through a computer-to-computer set up. This is perhaps the easiest way to communicate using VOIP. You wouldn't even need to pay for the long distance calls. All you need is the right software, a sound card and speakers along with the Internet connection. Apart from the ISP fee, your calls are practically free.
