What Are The Disadvantages Of VoIP?

Considering that there are numerous benefits to VoIP it's strange to think that there are any major disadvantages? There are actually a few. In order to have VoIP you need an internet connection. The internet connection preferably needs to be high speed; otherwise the quality in voice transmission can be questionable.
Secondly if you have a power outage you will loose your internet connection and hence your VoIP. This is considered a major disadvantage due in part because you may need to make a distress call during these particular times which leads me to the next disadvantage of VoIP.
When you make 911 calls using your traditional phone service your call
can be traced and routed to a local call center where they can locate you. This is a big plus as it enables them to locate you even if you have trouble communicating; however this is not possible with your VoIP. They cannot tell in effect where your internet phone call is originating from.
With VoIP the data sent can at times be scrambled. This can work fine when you are sending e-mail as it can reassemble itself on the other side, but as you can imagine this can be a disadvantage for VoIP as when communicating with another individual over the phone it is done in real time.
Although there are a few disadvantages to VoIP, many of these disadvantages are been addressed by the VoIp providers. They are constantly working on solutions to resolve these issues. I imagine in the not too distant future they will be able to get these bugs worked out.
