What is VoIP Vishing? Are You On The Alert for It?

Move over phishers, here come the vishers. Scammers have found a new playground - telephony. When somebody calls to tell you that there's something irregular with your credit card account, don't dial the number he or she gives you. Call your regular credit card company office instead.
A new type of scam
Instead of the usual email requests, scammers are using VoIP to get your credit card number, plus the codes. Any call asking you to confirm your account information should be suspect. What could be going on? These vishers are using VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol to rob people blind. That's what. Is VoIP technology going to give you another headache?
If you have learned to avoid clicking links, then learn to avoid calling a given number asking you to input your credit card number. The moment you tap the keyboard, the criminals are recording your account number with their computers at the other end of the line.
Everybody in the household and in the workplace should be on guard of this new wave scamming. Don't be tricked by the official looking number on the caller ID. Ask the caller if he can give you your name or account number and if he cant, it's likely a scam in the making, so shift to the red alert mode.
When getting a referencing call service, ask about their security measures. They'll give you a rundown on what is VoIP and the precautions you have to take at your end. You will learn what is VoIP technology and what it's like when taken to criminal extremes.
Don't touch the keyboard
When the caller informs you that your credit card has been debiting huge amounts from other accounts and asks you to call a number - that number will display a request for account verification. You could also be tricked into giving your PayPal account number.
As technology goes full speed, criminals also go full steam ahead. It takes technology to fight technology. An unaware public should be educated about vishing.
If tyou already know how to detect email scams like no "s" in the http and no padlock on the browser, you should think twice about giving away personal and financial information the phone.
Conference calling services are onto vanquishing vishing and telephone companies are ensuring secure network connections. Just for sure, don't key in your credit card number, no matter what. Is VoIP to be shunned then? No, being on guard and knowing all the scamming tricks will give you protection against the credit card identity thieves.
What goes on during vishing?
The thieves goes on war dialing - dialing all numbers to find out which numbers have computers and fax machines. They will guess the password and if they get it right, the game begins.
Next thing you know, you will be answering an automated call, which uses a fake user ID. When you make the call to a number you are provided with, an automated instruction will request you to confirm your bank account or credit card or PayPal number. In some occasions, you'll be asked to give your date of birth too. Then the rest will be history.
