The Advantages of using VoIP
By Joe Robertson

VOIP makes use of the packet switching abilities of the Internet to provide a phone service. There are several advantages that a VOIP can offer over circuit switching. Like, take for example, packet switching permits a number of phone calls to be made and needs the space that will be occupied by only a single circuit switched network.

Now, let us consider there are two terminals X and Y and both are exploiting the service of a VOIP provider. Both, X and Y have analog phones which are connected to the ATA. The procedure of a phone call taking place between X and Y using VOIP would be something like the following:

The receiver is picked up at end X and a signal is sent to the ATA. The ATA after receiving this signal sends across a dial tone. This is like a signal for the person at end X to know that the connection to the Internet has been successful. Then, the phone number of the person at end Y is dialed. The ATA then converts these tones into digital signals or data and stores it temporarily.

A request of the phone number is sent to the VOIP call processor. Here it is checked if the number is in the valid format or not. At this stage a process called mapping comes into play, through which the VOIP call processor can trace the phone number. In this process, the number dialed is deciphered into a kind of IP address and the devices at either end are connected. A signal is then sent to the ATA at end Y to make the phone ring there.

As the receiver is picked up at Y, an creation of a session takes place between the two systems and both ends are geared up to receive and send data packets back and forth. All this is handled by the Infrastructure of the Internet like it would handle a web page or an e-mail. The protocol has to be the same in order to communicate with ease. Once the conversation ends and the receivers are put down at both ends, the circuit closes between the phone and the ATA. A signal is sent by the ATA to terminate the session over the Internet.

A very big advantage and perhaps the most important of this switching of data packets is that the data networks understand the technology well. So, a shift to this form of communication will give telephone companies the advantage of working and operating like computers do.
